Richmond's "sports scene" offers organizations for children and adults, from amatuers to pros. While Richmond International Raceway brings car racing fans, the Richmond Marathon, dubbed "America's Friendliest Marathon" by Runner's World magazine (and a qualifier for the Boston Marathon), attracts the "foot racers." In 2008 the University of Richmond Spiders football team won their first national championship, while Virginia Commonwealth University Rams basketball always strives to represent Richmond well in the NCAA. Soccer fans will enjoy watching the Richmond Kickers (2009 USL-2 Champions) and soccer moms will love the many opportunities for the kids to participate in area leagues.
